Self-Soothing with Self-Compassion

Written by Amanda Carson

Self-soothing while practicing self-compassion communicates that we support ourselves during our most challenging times. Awareness of what we need in any given moment and meeting that need is a way to foster self connection and self trust.

When we resist what we are experiencing, whether that be a thought, feeling or behaviour, we can’t take care of or support ourselves. With self-soothing we can allow our emotions to flow through and be released while holding space for ourselves.

Some examples of this include; visualizing you’re in a safe space, speaking kind words to yourself, giving yourself a big hug, placing a hand on the heart and breathe into that space and move your body in a way that feels good to you.
